Over 90% of the students who attend our school qualify for free lunches which automatically labels them as at-risk students. The learners who enter my Reading Intervention class are reading at least two grade levels behind their peers. At times, the gap is even greater.
The students are also identified as learners with dyslexia, English Language Learners, Emotionally Disturbed, or homeless.
Some have simply fallen through the cracks. They have become used to being seen as failures and have given up on learning how to read, much less learning to enjoy reading.
William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
It is my desire to break the instilled cycle of failure and turn my students into motivated and successful readers and writers of their bright future. The fulfillment of this project will help me accomplish this goal.
Due to recent budget cuts, teachers have had to either purchase basic classroom supplies or adjust quality instruction to match the limited resources available. The supplies requested would help replenish some of the supplies students and teachers need to restore instruction to the highest level to assist in student achievement.
One might wonder how classroom supplies impact student achievement.
When working with a 90% economically disadvantaged student population, you cannot assume students will enter the classroom equipped with supplies such as writing instruments. Teacher supplies become exhausted throughout the year. Many times, replenishing supplies for both teacher and student success is left upon the teachers who are often financially strained.
Equipping teachers with items such as copy paper and notebooks will give them some of the tools they need to provide students with Tier 1 instruction of the highest level. Even as we move toward increasing technological skills with students, basic supplies are the foundation of all classroom instruction.
