Bringing Back Students Through STEM

Help me give my students something fun to look forward to. This includes coding robots and an iPad.

My Students

I teach in a small rural school in a town of 800. Most of our teachers teach dual grades. I teach 16 3rd graders that primarily come from low income families. 75% of my students are below grade level and math and/or reading.

Covid has had a tremendous negative effect of my students academically as well as emotionally.

Coming to school every day is a struggle for many of them and miss school regularly and are very far behind. Many of my students also come from very hard family situations that no 9 year old should have to deal with. I am sometimes the only positive influence they have in their lives.

My Project

Social-emotional learning is so important right now with the pandemic and young students have not been left out of the stress and emotional toll it has taken. These coding robots will give them an opportunity to use some skills that they are using and put them in action. The reward of accomplishment will help build confidence and make learning fun and help them be excited about coming to school and learning.

My students love coding and would love the opportunity to use the coding skills that they are learning with these coding robots.

The iPad will be used to help them code their bots and show them how to use them. We do have some older chrome books that do not always work so it would be nice to have the iPad as a back up. Sometimes students need hands-on activities to give them a break and help them to reset and refocus.

With limited funding I have not have the opportunity to share many STEM related hands-on activities with them. This project will help my students engage with STEM and give them incentives to work hard and work together to accomplish tasks.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
