My Students
Our school is a medium-sized high school in Oregon. We are just outside the Portland Area and are considered semi-rural.
I enjoy teaching in my school because the students are hard working, respectful, and motivated to learn.
The teachers are open to try new things and support each other.
Last year we started a brand new schedule together and we jumped in head first! Our "J-Term" allows us to be creative and try brand new classes and project ideas that aren't normally tried in other schools. Our students are excited for the new opportunities that this gives them to broaden their learning. Particularly, students have requested a sewing class to learn the skill. At the moment, we cannot offer it because of the lack of machines in our district.
My Project
In a world where students spend so much time on their electronic devices, students are missing an understanding of how things are put together and how they can be fixed. In our daily schedule, we have the opportunity to teach classes students are interested in for 6 weeks/year. The teachers teach what they know about and are excited about, and the students sign up for what interests them.
In our new sewing class, students will be able to design, engineer, and create clothing, tools, specialty projects, art, and other useful items with a sewing machine and scissors.
Through sewing, students learn a new skill they will use as young entrepreneurs and artists, they will problem solve, persevere through challenges, and learn about themselves.
Like most other schools in our region, we were hit hard by the 2008 recession. Budget cuts destroyed the Home Economics classes, the teachers were let go, and the sewing machines sold for funds to support the rest of the school. The first "J-Term" sewing classes will be offered in January and June 2018 for nearly 2 hours per day, every day for 1 month. The first 60 students will get to learn to sew this year, and at least 60 more next year. If successful, your donation will continue to be used for years to come.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
