In a world where students spend so much time on their electronic devices, students are missing an understanding of how things are put together and how they can be fixed. In our daily schedule, we have the opportunity to teach classes students are interested in for 6 weeks/year. The teachers teach what they know about and are excited about, and the students sign up for what interests them. In our new sewing class, students will be able to design, engineer, and create clothing, tools, specialty projects, art, and other useful items with a sewing machine and scissors. Through sewing, students learn a new skill they will use as young entrepreneurs and artists, they will problem solve, persevere through challenges, and learn about themselves. Like most other schools in our region, we were hit hard by the 2008 recession. Budget cuts destroyed the Home Economics classes, the teachers were let go, and the sewing machines sold for funds to support the rest of the school. The first "J-Term" sewing classes will be offered in January and June 2018 for nearly 2 hours per day, every day for 1 month. The first 60 students will get to learn to sew this year, and at least 60 more next year. If successful, your donation will continue to be used for years to come.
