My Students

My students are from inner-city, low-income homes. Their parents are immigrants and new to the language. They spend many hours in the school building and at after-school centers. Art is one of the only subjects that lets them explore themselves and communicate in a way that language isn't an issue.

My students are eager to learn, have a huge imagination and plenty of creativity.

They are from many backgrounds. By learning about others through art, my students will get a clear idea of what being a part of a community is. Being exposed to as much as possible is so important.

My Project

In the last few years classroom teachers haven’t been able to teach children cursive handwriting due to the ever demanding academic needs in testing subject areas. Penmanship is becoming a lost subject in the public school system. As the art teacher I think it’s important that somebody step up and make these children capable of signing their name on an official document in America. With these labels, table cards and script handwriting tape, I’m going to teach each child in the 3,4 and 5th grade how to sign their name in cursive writing.

It is something, I believe, is just as important in our changing times.
