Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my 7th grade students, who attend middle school in the Bronx, have never left New York. In fact, some of them rarely have the opportunity to leave the Bronx, or even their own neighborhoods. It is therefore important for me, as a teacher with many different experiences, to bring the world to them.
I teach an elective course entitled "Asian Art". My students learn about the history and culture of China, India, and Japan through studying and re-creating various forms of art. Some examples of projects that my students will work on this year are writing Chinese calligraphy, folding origami, creating Mendhi and Rangoli patterns, and writing and performing Bunraku and Kabuki theater. In addition to making the art, we also learn about the history of each form of art, and discuss its connection to the people and culture of its respective country.
Asian art is vibrant, colorful, and intricate. Many supplies, including paint, brushes, markers, modeling clay, colored sand, and different types of paper, are needed to give my students the experience of creating works of art that not only look nice, but are also authentic.
With your help, I can continue to bring Asia, a world so far removed from my 7th graders, closer to the Bronx.
