My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book and couldn't put it down? Unfortunately, many ninth graders have not discovered that book yet. I am hoping that coupling this book with Homer's The Odyssey will reignite their desire to read for enjoyment as well as information.

My students are high school freshmen who live in a low-income area in Georgia.

Their reading levels range tremendously, therefore, uncovering a book they can all enjoy is very difficult. I believe this book, with action, adventure, mythological creatures, and a smidgen of romance might just do the trick.

My Project

Last year I had my students read The Odyssey and then we took a field trip to see The Lightning Thief in a theater. Many of the students loved it so much, it sparked a race amongst them to see who could read all of the books in the series first. So this year, I plan to read it with them (because the book is always better than the movie), use the audio CD in a listening center for my struggling and ESOL readers, and watch the video. Then we can compare and contrast them with each other and The Odyssey.

Students will not read if they find the material boring or don't relate to them.

In a low-income area such as ours, it is especially difficult to find something that is relevant and uplifting too. This book takes an extremely old topic like mythology and brings it to life before their very eyes. Before they realize what's happening, they're drawn into the book and into a different world where young adults that you least expect, can be heroes.
