Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a first-year Teach For America teacher in the Bay Area, I could not wait to bring great, classic literature into my classroom. As I have grown to know my students and my curriculum, there could be no better novel for an Eighth grader than Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". To undertake our reading, I am requesting a class set (35 copies) of the novel. Just this year, 84 students will be exposed to the novel. I will, however, make "To Kill a Mockingbird" an ever-present fixture in the Eighth grade curriculum at our school. In 5 years, this donation will have touched more than 400 young minds. I teach Eighth grade Language Arts at Hoover School in Redwood City, California. The overwhelming majority of the students I serve are English Language Learners. Ours is a very working class community and many of my students are unfamiliar with the world outside of their small neighborhood. Through literature, the students can hope to open their minds to a different place and a different time. The students will learn to think critically and hopefully seek to know and understand more.
