I teach third grade on the South side of Chicago. My students come from low income homes and have very little exposure to the outside world. I have always wanted to do "current events" with my class, but it can be challenging to find news articles that young readers can grasp and comprehend on their own. Having a yearlong subscription to Time for Kids would be a wonderful way to bring real world events into my classroom. Not only does Time for Kids provide every child with their own third-grade-friendly issue, but they also provide a teacher's guide to help faciltate discussions and projects. Furthermore, my students will be faced with the ever-daunting end-of-year standardized tests in reading for the first time this year. Reading news articles is a great way to prepare them for the different kinds of texts they may come accross on the end of year test. The articles found in Time for Kids would offer a wonderful alternative to the often mundane test-prep books teachers are usually forced to use. Reading Time for Kids on a weekly basis would help my students understand the greater issues that surround their community and encourage them to be active participants in society. It would lend itself to discussions and debates in the classroom and show my students the importance of being an educated and worldly member of society. These are the kind of habits that so desperately need to be instilled in our youth and yet are so often overlooked, especially within the community where I teach. Giving the gift of a class subscription to Time for Kids would be enjoyed all year long and would me so much to me and my students!
