As a Literacy Coach, part of my role is to support the development of our teachers so that they can best meet the needs of students. Research has shown that teacher effectiveness is THE most important factor contributing to student achievement. Attracting experienced, effective teachers to the Bayview is a challenge. A quarter of the teachers at my school are in their first year and another 50% have less than 4 years experience. This makes for a vibrant, energized staff who still have a lot to learn about teaching. We need effective, inspired teachers who are equipped with strategies to support the social and emotional development of children. These essential skills underpin all the important work that takes place in classrooms. Kristi’s full day workshop would provide an inspirational platform upon which to launch adult learning at the start of our school year. Her seminar includes opportunities for teachers to learn the research behind cultivating personal growth and empathy in students, practical strategies for teaching social skills, and space to consider how factors like the classroom environment impact learning. As a presenter, she is known for leaving teachers with practical tips, funny anecdotes and most importantly, hope! Finally, it’s worth noting the increased impact professional development has on a group of teachers when they are able to partake in it together. Discussing ideas with others increases one’s ability to retain new information, and attending this workshop as a group means our teachers will have multiple colleagues with whom they can discuss and renew their learning. They will be more likely to put ideas into practice, stay motivated throughout the year, and will have a shared vision around student learning. Teachers are our students’ most valuable resource - help us invest in them!
