My students need a listening center, a bookbinding machine and more, so they can work on English language skills, practice fluent reading, enhance their listening skills, and enjoy classical music, too!

My Students
My students and I need to be creative in our learning! It is what inspires us.
Ours is a community of language learners and enthusiasts, and it is my personal mission to insure that each of these students develop into a thoughtful, contributing, bi-literate citizen of our world.
That means they need to be able to speak, write, and read in both Spanish and English. They need to know how to think for themselves. They need to be exposed to as much and as many cultural experiences as possible. And they need to be able to move freely - both literally and figuratively - between at least two different worlds.
We are a Title I school with access to very few materials. 95% of my students qualify for free lunch. Textbooks are shared. Workbooks are not to be written in. And hands-on tools designed to be used in pairs are often shared among groups of 10 students at a time.
My Project
We are requesting a listening center and a bookbinding kit. Both will together and separately allow us to access our creativity, and help me to infuse my lessons with artistic and expressive outlets.
Young students must be allowed to express themselves; it is what inspires them.
Today, for example, we studied figurative language (similes, metaphors...) via an inspiring song from the Broadway production of Les Misérables. The kids quickly mastered the lesson and urged me to tell them more about the fascinating characters of Jean Valjean and Javert. I could see that they were genuinely inspired by the story, so I told them every detail I could recall. They LOVED it.
I would love to take them to a production of the show, though that is not likely to happen for 34 students. But with the help of a new listening center and a new bookbinding machine, I CAN allow them to listen to the Broadway soundtrack, and then "publish" their own fabulous stories. What a way to value their work!
Your donation will help a class of smart, sweet, and funny fourth-graders become better, more engaged readers and writers.
You will help them learn how to appreciate many genres of literature and music, and to express themselves more creatively, having been exposed to such works. And most importantly, you will make their little hearts sing, knowing that adults exist in this world who think that they are important and worthy little people.
Thank you for supporting education, teachers, and kids.
