"Ahhh, I get it!" is heard across the room in our classroom. Students are actively learning and finding success in math by hands-on experiences. The student population at our school is comprised of many differing cultures, socioeconomic levels, and academic success. We are a magnet school of Traditional and Global Studies with the focus on writing. Yes, the students are top in the county for writing, but they also are super smart in math. Our kids love learning with their friends and working collaboratively to "get" math.
All of our students, poverty or not, deserve the opportunity to learn by actively engaging and collaborating with each other.
Our classroom needs manipulatives to make this happen. The students love to have fun with math!
My Project
Our project is to engage students with everyday lessons using whiteboards and dry-erase markers. The students immediately become engaged when they have a marker--it's big! Colorful! And they love it.
Half the battle of teaching and learning is being engaged; the individual boards give the students an opportunity to work one-on-one with their teacher in a large group.
The students have the ability to raise the boards with their answers or thoughts and share with their peers and/or teacher quickly in an enlarged format. The students are able to erase and redo easily without using excessive amounts of paper. The boards are blank on one side and have a coordinate plane on the other side. Multi-colors and fine tip markers fit best with the middle school class room; kids are able to express their creativity and write neatly. Last but not least, our standards require us to graph many lines and shapes. The stamp and stamp pad provides us a quick, and effortless way to include graphs in our notes and not burn through a ton of expensive graph paper.
