My Students

The humanities have always been a bedrock of our academic profile. We're an International Baccalaureate school with a significant number of students who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. We thrive on a strong language-arts track, and a partnership with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival would very much strengthen that foundation.

Our department has determined that our populace learns best through engaging, interactive methods.

Learning production-based techniques from OSF would bring the literature we study to life for the students, and open them up to the beauty of Shakespeare's plays and other dramatic works.

Of course, Hamlet says it best:

"Suit the action to the word, the word to the action, with this

special observance, that you o'erstep not the modesty of nature:

for any thing so o'erdone is from the purpose of playing, whose

end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold as 'twere the

mirror up to nature: to show virtue her feature, scorn her own

image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure."

My Project

In our language arts courses, we bring in a dramatic piece at every grade level. In 9th grade, we study A Midsummer Night's Dream; in 10th grade, we look at Othello; in 11th grade, we read Fences by August Wilson; and in 12th we read Hamlet.

The OSF School Visit Program would better engage students in these units and show the teachers how to use more production-based activities and assessments in our instruction.

We've found that, when studying a dramatic work, hands-on activities that get students to engage with the work are very beneficial in overall analysis and understanding.

In addition, the benefits of having students see professional actors engage in their craft would spark new interest in the performing arts and literature. Our current drama instructor is retiring this year, and having a focus on drama in the upcoming year would ease the transition between instructors.
