Bring Strings to the Southside
My students need violas, rosin and shoulder rests for beginning orchestra.
We are building an orchestra one student at a time. Our school district doesn't include an orchestra program, but our elementary school is creating a musical identity and "Empowering Students through Arts" with strings. Children are given an opportunity to grow and impact their community with music
For the most part our students come from low income, working class families.
In fact, 68% are on free and reduced lunch. Our part of the community is known as the Southside. This area has a reputation of being rough and unrefined, but it is also a close knit group with great pride. This children are simply wonderful, fun, energetic and excited to learn. Our school is a supportive place for these students giving them a stable environment which they may not go home to.
We currently have some cheap violins that we are learning on, but with your donation we would have better quality instruments. The students have exploratory classes on the violin and then some are chosen to join an after school group. This is where the violas come in. A few of the students will get to learn viola to add to our string ensemble that will hopefully turn into an orchestra. They will meet together at least once a week to learn the instruments as well as practice at home. As they grow as musicians the hope is that they will be able to purchase their own instrument and we can pass them down to others. However, some students simply can't and we want to provide them with an instrument as long as we can.
This fledgling project is only in it's second year, but we have already seen students inspired.
Students who are academically gifted are given a new challenge. Students who struggle with learning are becoming more focused and motivated. Students who are obsessed with sports are also becoming obsessed with the arts. It is creating a culture that will redefine our community. These better quality instruments and supplies will make the experience for the students even more enjoyable. Thanks!
