Bring Soil Carbon Coalition to High School

My students need to bring the Soil Carbon Coalition to Chicago for a “Climate, Water, Soil and Hope” week-long residency program.

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students grow up in a city where some of the world's most fertile and productive soils lie buried under six inches of asphalt. It has been challenging to impart on my students, most of whom have no experience with nature, the importance of vibrant and healthy ecological communities.

My small high school contains an economically and racially diverse group of students who come from across the city for our International Baccalaureate program.

My classrooms include a wide range of high-achieving, average, and special-needs students. My school is working hard to provide opportunities for all students, no matter their background, to succeed in advanced IB classes. Due to citywide budget cuts, my school no longer has money to fund trips for my class to conduct scientific fieldwork. While most of biology can be learned in the classroom, I strive to provide authentic learning experiences for my students in all aspects of science. It is not fair or reasonable to force my students to pay out-of-pocket for this experience. Therefore, I am seeking funds for experts who will visit and train staff and students in how to conduct meaningful fieldwork in our own community.

My Project

Soil’s capacity to influence carbon and water cycling is an ancient truth, and studying soil can be cutting-edge science. But we have not been teaching the science of soil because, until recently, the curriculum did not exist. The non-profit Soil Carbon Coalition has come up with a citizen-science program to show students, teachers, and community members how plants and microbes turn atmospheric carbon into soil carbon and how the formation of soil carbon influences many local and global concerns such as flooding, drought, climate change, and food and water security. In this residency, students will explore the biological and social processes that influence landscape flows and functions, connecting basic scientific concepts to present day issues. They will do this through a combination of group discussions, skits, and indoor and outdoor hands-on activities demonstrating the power of community, systems thinking, and inter-connection on many levels—from microscopic to world-wide.

Our school will be able develop our own innovative soil-restoration projects, monitor them over time, and share our data with a worldwide network for years to come.

The residency will link our school into an international network, giving students contacts and contexts to become innovative leaders on sustainability. This project will empower the next generation with the tools and information they will need to create thriving communities on healthy, productive land.

Didi Pershouse (The Soil Carbon Coalition will conduct a week-long residency at Ogden. Didi will work with students on whole-systems landscape function, and the role of photosynthesis and soil carbon in climate resilience and water management.
