This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want to give my students a huge boost in their confidence by helping them read a novel written entirely in Spanish. We will bring the novel to life using "reader's theater," which includes reading aloud with assigned roles, narration, acting, props, sound effects, and lots of fun!

My classroom rewards risk-taking students who interact with the language, perform for their peers and applaud each others efforts!

We act, we laugh, we collaborate, and we use lots of Spanish every day. My students are a diverse bunch of high school students, many of whom are interested in careers in medical fields and in having a working knowledge of Spanish. Our school has a strong foreign language program, and many students continue beyond the one mandatory year of language to take the optional state exam in Spanish and AP-level classes. In addition, our school is large, but retains a small school feel. Students are well-known by their teachers, and receive extensive academic and emotional support so they can graduate college and be career ready. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately thirteen percent receive special education services. Our 4-year graduation rate greatly exceeds the citywide average, and is currently around 90%.

My Project

Reading a novel written entirely in Spanish is a huge accomplishment for beginning language learners. It's rewarding to observe trepidation on students' faces when they hear the words, "we're going to read a novel in Spanish" turn to joy as we bring that novel to life. My students should read "Agentes secrets y el mural de Picasso". The novel is accessible to 1st year students and is instrumental in empowering students through art because a Picasso painting (Guérnica) is at the heart of the novel. I will use Guernica to expand upon students' knowledge of Spanish history and culture. We have already explored bullfighting, the running of the bulls, the Spanish royal family, and the Cataluña region. This novel incorporates some of those elements, and also introduces students to historical rulers (Francisco Franco) and important sites in Paris, Barcelona and Pamplona. Actors, props, and costumes will help my numerous visual learners understand what is happening in the novel.

When I have read novels targeted at Spanish learners in the past, students reported a boost in their confidence with the language.

I want my current, and future students to feel the same sense of accomplishment that can come only at the end of the journey that a novel takes the reader on. I hope to encourage my 1st year students to continue their study of the language and take the state exam in Spanish (the LOTE). Doing this is essential to obtaining an Advanced Regents Diploma in NY state.
