This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students range from Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors, all with Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia. My students require multi-modes of input to learn. They receive their English and Reading classes in an instructional, self-contained setting to provide intensive supports in Reading in a small group setting. They are part of a Multi-Sensory Reading Program, which is a highly structured program using many styles of learning to help students who are either non-readers or far below their grade level.
My students are highly motivated by technology, but due to the lack of technology in the school, the students do not have the ability to have this available to them at all times.
Our school is located in a high poverty area, so there are limited resources in the community as well as in the school. My students need hands-on opportunities to learn new skills. They struggle with learning new concepts or understanding concepts without the use of visuals and/or manipulatives to be able to see and do. When they are able to use a variety of learning styles, they are more engaged and learn best.
My Project
The Dremel 3D Printer will allow my students to take learning to another level. The 3D printer will add to their multi-sensory learning and allow students to bring ideas to life. With the 3D Printer, we will be able to apply the concepts of Novel Engineering which involve inventing and creating solutions to problems identified in a story. The 3D printer will allow them to create their solutions so they are able to visualize and analyze their inventions.
The 3D printer will improve their engagement in reading novels through Novel Engineering and allow them to use multi-modes of learning.
The 3D printer will be a great tool for diverse learning needs and will allow students to use a variety of learning styles (visual, tactile, kinesthetic) to improve reading skills.
