Bring Homework to Life With Virtual Reality!

My students need a Samsung Gear 360 degree camera and a memory card to record and share life in their community with other students at school and around the world!

My Students

My fourth graders are motivated, hard-working, and inquisitive students who really love solving tough problems and exploring new technologies. Many of them are English language learners who come from low-income families.

My students take school very seriously and love to impress adults with how smart and talented they are!

In class surveys, many of my students identified themselves as visual learners. They are eager to share the original virtual reality content that they create about their community with other students!

My Project

One of my students' favorite subjects is social studies. They love reading about different places from around the world. Recently I've started encouraging my students and their families to participate in experiential homework assignments in their community instead of just working on paper-and-pencil homework tasks. These "mini field trips" help students connect to their community and build their background knowledge for reading and test taking. The students and I created a long list of possible local destinations to choose from, like a menu!

Some of our experiential homework assignment options so far have been to try soup dumplings at a local restaurant in order to write a persuasive review or to visit a local park to record data on insects using a quadrat in preparation for a science project.

This Samsung Gear 360 camera and memory card will allow my students to document and share their experiences not only with students at our own school who might not be able to visit all of these places but also with people from around the world. I hope this kind of homework assignment will inspire others to explore their communities as part of their own experiential homework assignments someday.

This virtual reality project isn't just fun, but it's also an important opportunity for my students to become familiar with the rapidly growing STEM field of virtual reality. These students will be able to take ownership of their homework and learning in a way that would not possible without this technology. Thank you!
