I teach a special education class, grades 5 and 6, in an extremely impoverished community in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, because of the need to focus on reading and writing, art has been totally removed from my curriculum. My students have learning disabilities and do not receive the necessary self-esteem boosting grades through their academics. They are however quite creative and artistic. From their doodling I can see that many are quite talented. I would like to encourage these talents. We really need art supplies. If I could get each child the necessary art supplies I would give up my lunch hour to teach them (I have an art background). What I propose is the donation of drawing tablets, paint, and an art supply kit for each of my thirteen students (fourteen including me). Your generosity in donating these supplies would be greatly appreciated and quite possibly change the course of my students lives. We have a book of the month response due this month. The children would like to create a mural. We would use these supplies to create one.
