My students need 32 copies of Jane Austen's brilliant book, "Northanger Abbey."

30 talented young adults are doing something that was one unthinkable in my inner-city school: they're taking AP English Literature. In spite of everything going against them - including the fact that most are reading below grade level - they are invested in our mission and determined to succeed.
The biggest challenge I have faced in teaching AP English Lit over the past two years is finding texts that will engage and appeal to my students. Although they still aren't as strong of readers as I'd like for them to be, they're growing rapidly by reading challenging and engrossing novels. There is one more book I need to add to our curriculum this year to really get the job done: "Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen.
"Northanger Abbey" is key to my students' success for any number of reasons: Jane Austen's prose is accessible - but still challenging - for my students; her characters are ripe for analysis and discussion; and her narrative voice and asides will engage my students. The narrative asides in this book will tie into the conversations we've already begun, exploring why it is we read fiction and what the worth of the novel really is.
Your donation will ensure that my scholars have actual books to read as we delve into Austen this year. My building is unable to fund the novels I need for AP, so I've had to accumulate them on my own. With your help, we can make sure that my real scholars have real books to read this school year - not just photocopied packets. Thank you for helping us achieve our dreams!
