My Students

I work in a public selective enrollment high school with 80% of low-income students. Students who are learning Chinese mandarin as a second language, 90% of them stay in the program for the whole four years of high school.

I believe the real cultural competency education happening in daily classroom, as an educator, I am not only teaching students what they want to learn, but also telling them who I am, who they are.

My students were highly motivated, and I am working on providing not only great language learning experience but also cultural enrichment programs to my classroom.

Every year we have students received the scholarships to China, and win medals for Mandarin speech contests. We we are building strong cultural competency to prepare them to be global citizens. However, with limited resources, what teachers can do is limited as well.

My Project

Cultural competency is always essential for students growth. This year I am going to have an Asian American culture book projects for students to read and discuss their reflections from different stories.

The books will focus on Asian American history and culture, to bring students different perspectives about Asian immigrants lives.

The books covered immigrant city on and historical stories from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Vietnam immigrants.

After this project, students will have a better understanding about Asian American history, their roles in American history and culture.

Understanding their perspectives will bring more representation from Asian American students, as well as building an inclusive curriculum to school.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
