Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Prospect Heights High School Campus in Brooklyn is now comprised of five individual high schools within one building, and it is attended by about 1,100 students. The original inhabitant, Prospect Heights H.S., will be phased out in a year. This transition was implimented because of failing grades and poor performance, and it has meant many challenges. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, have been particularly affected. Historically, the sports program (notably basketball) had been very prominent at Prospect Heights. Sports were considered a vital aspect of high school education and an important bridge between learning and experience. However, fiscal concerns and budget cuts and poor performance meant the teams were dropped. As the old school began its phase-out, many of the teachers that also served as coaches relocated. The situation deteriorated to the point where, a few years back, when I asked for the job of being coach, I was told I couldn't have it because there wasn't a team! I teach math, and in addition to that, I currently am responsible for coaching four teams. This has been a remarkable turn-around for the kids. The Prospect Heights boys basketball team moved up this year and could advance to the A division next season. I really enjoy helping to provide all the kids with outlets for their skills, and giving them a chance to develop as athletes, a chance which they might not otherwise have. However, we do not have a budget, or wealthy alumni, to help us purchase athletic equipment, and the growing program needs help to succeed. I am asking for funding to purchase basketballs and hoops, florescent cones and ball bags and valves for inflating the balls. Although my students understand that clothes and material things don't make men, the kids do deserve better. A whole lot better. I've gotten fantastic results so far, but our basketballs are five to seven years old, and my students would love some help in reviving many of our school teams. Thank you.
