Help our little eyes! We are learning decoding strategies for figuring out tricky words, an essential for becoming brilliant readers! Big books will help their little eyes as they see their teacher model strategies, and later spark their interest as they practice on their own with the same books!
My students are just like any other first graders- eager to learn, hungry for knowledge, and full of spunk!
They recently went through a school turn-around (from troubled public school to a structured charter school) and are thriving with our new school and showing gains in all subjects. However, they come with backgrounds much different than the typical student. Some have grown up far too fast, and others are starving for attention that they do not receive at home. Imagine being raised by your third grade brother. Or not having that homework help so desperately needed, even when asking for it. Maybe even knowing after a certain time that it's not safe to go outside. Their resiliency amazes me every day. Our classroom has become a sanctuary for learning, showing kindness and respect, and letting go of worries!
We are asking for BIG books because my students have requested them!!! They are enamored with the idea that these books are just....well so BIG! Their fascination and love for reading grows even more so as they go through books that are just as large as they are. These BIG books will really have an effect on their knowledge of decoding strategies. For example- picture Ms. Roosa at the front of the room with a regular sized book, stumped on a tricky word and using "Stretchy the Snake" strategy to model blending. This is awfully difficult for little eyes, we have 26 students...very hard to see in the back row! You will be hearing, "What word are you stuck on? Can I see?". Now picture this situation again with our beautiful new BIG books- students will be able to see each word, and even come to the board and finger frame it or use the pointer to identify and blend for their peers, and the whole group can see each and every word!
If you support our classroom project, this first grade class will be better equipped with the essentials they need for their entire school career.
Reading is such a key part of their lives that will take them to high school, college, and beyond! Please help me in better teaching these scholars the strategies that will last them a life time!
