My students are just like any other first graders- eager to learn, hungry for knowledge, and full of spunk! They recently went through a school turn-around (from troubled public school to a structured charter school) and are thriving with our new school and showing gains in all subjects. However, they come with backgrounds much different than the typical student. Some have grown up far too fast, and others are starving for attention that they do not receive at home. Imagine being raised by your third grade brother. Or not having that homework help so desperately needed, even when asking for it. Maybe even knowing after a certain time that it's not safe to go outside. Their resiliency amazes me every day. Our classroom has become a sanctuary for learning, showing kindness and respect, and letting go of worries!
