My Project

This school year, I will be teaching three sections of Math 3, AP Precalculus, and IB Mathematics for 11th and 12th graders. All of these classes have a required standardized test that students must take at the end of the semester or year. One of the biggest factors that hinder students from being successful on the standardized testing is not understanding the questions and the mathematical language being used. Because of this, I am always finding ways to help build their mathematical literacy, one way is by requiring students to make flash cards for each topic we cover. I provide index cards for students to use because many cannot afford to purchase all the necessary school supplies. I have also found that many of my students in the past would not take notes or when they did, they would not utilize them. So, I have started providing colored ink pens in class for students to use because if their notes are colorful, I have found they are more likely to go back and look at them and use them to help them grasp the concepts. We also utilize guided notes which cuts down the time to take notes and allows for more time for us to have guided and independent practice. In my upper-level math classes, I use composition notebook for students to glue in shorthand math concepts notes that correspond with their learning objectives. This becomes helpful in organizing their notes as well as a quick guide they can use when completing assignments. This is very helpful in solidifying major concepts. All of my students aim to be successful and are willing to try, they just have to be given the correct tools to be successful.
