I work at a junior high school in a small, rural town in Texas. Our school, students, and faculty have had one of the roughest years ever in 2017-2018. We were hit, like so many others, by Hurricane Harvey. Our entire district was affected, all seven campuses. It has been a nightmare and things seem to be improving but it has been a long, slow journey.
My students are still displaced from their homes, our campus, and are still only going to school for half a day.
We lost almost everything in our town. These kids lost desks, supplies, activities. Everyone one of them has been affected in some way. Some lost their homes and cars. Some had family lose their homes and vehicles. Some have people living with them. Everyone is emotional, tired, displaced, and living life as "normal" as they can even though nothing around us is normal. None of this is "normal." My kids are resilient and fighters. They refuse to let Harvey hold them back or ruin their 8th-grade year. I beg you to help them recover and come back on top!
My Project
The crayons, map pencils, markers, and scissors will help my students bring their projects and papers to life. My teen leadership classes will use these items daily and use them to spread encouragement, happiness, and appreciation to various people within our community. They especially love to surprise the teachers, staff, and paraprofessionals with notes of appreciation and gratitude.
These materials will help students to be actively engaged and allow them to be creative while having fun learning.
Many of my students need supplies that their parents cannot afford to buy them. These materials will go a long way to help!
