Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Can I go book shopping?" My students ask daily. Many of them are at the stage where they are reading a lot of short books and my small supply of second-hand outdated books is not enough to sustain their quick learning and interest.
I teach in a first grade classroom full of avid readers, brilliant mathematicians and curious scientists.
Many of my students are reading well above grade level and all are eager to learn and explore. They are all different: some like princesses, some prefer Angry Birds, while others would rather read than play at recess! My school is 100% free lunch and many of my amazing students come from difficult home situations where they face many challenges. At the age of six, many have experienced gunshot violence or have known hunger . School is a safe place for my students. With all that is going on in their lives, the classroom is nurturing and full of opportunity and excitement. Each day students can explore their potential through discovery and each day students gain confidence in their abilities.
My Project
If we had a leveled library in our classroom, students would be able to read quality books at their level. As a first year teacher, I have collected as many books as I can from garage sales, free bins, and second hand stores, however these are not the kind of books that inspire. Many of the books I have are outdated, inappropriate for emerging readers, and I cannot level them because they are not real literature. It is vital at this stage in their reading development that my students are reading books that engage them and that they can understand. Finding a "just right" book is like finding buried treasure. Reading opens up an entire world and it can make students like mine feel safe in an otherwise chaotic environment.
Your donations to my project will change the reading mentality of my students.
If students are reading books that are a good fit for them they will become more excited about learning and their reading abilities will quickly improve. Not only that, but their enthusiasm towards reading will increase when they find a book exactly at their level and they can read the words and comprehend what they are reading independently!
