Help me give my students a relaxing, soothing, sensory friendly classroom that will allow them to focus better and help them learn to be more internally self regulated by providing natural lighting instead of fluorescent lighting.
I work with students from 3 to 5 years old that present with a variety of disabilities. these can range from speech delays, ASD, global delays, motoric disabilities as well as other types of challenges.
Children can focus better and have more positive experiences when the environment is calming, utilizing natural lighting and soothing background music.
I am excited about reducing the amount of fluorescent lighting in my classroom. I want to replace the majority of the fluorescent use by using Christmas lights around the room, , full spectrum light bulbs in lamps as well as pink and blue covers for the florescent lights over head when more light is needed in the room.
The fluorescent lighting used in most classrooms can lead to a host of difficulties for children (and adults), including migraines. By diffusing these harsh lights, and introducing more natural lighting into the classroom, we’re working with the body’s natural circadian rhythms to indicate to the brain that it’s time to be awake and alert.
Additionally, I love the idea of playing a variety of music in the background such as classical music that can lower heart rates and promote a positive feeling in the classroom.
My Project
When the learning environment is calm, with natural lighting such as the lamps with LED lights or the string of lights children are able to relax and focus better on their learning tasks.
Furthermore, it has been shown that fluorescent lighting can cause stress and possibly effecting their attention abilities as well as cortisone levels resulting in rewiring of the synapses in the brain.
The lighting filters will cut down the the fluorescent lighting effects enabling an environment more conducive to learning.
Playing soothing music in the background will tap into the positive benefits that classical music can offer by reducing stress therefore increasing attention and focus.
