Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach at a low-income school where over fifty percent of the population is on free or reduced lunch. What this means is that our children do not come to school with the advantages that other schools in neighboring schools have within our district. My students are sometimes that babysitters of their younger siblings while mom or dad work late into the evening. It is not uncommon for them to do their homework while cooking and getting everyone ready for bed because there is no other adult in the household to help take care of the family.
Despite their disadvantage, these children come to school with smiles on their faces when they see their teachers and classmates.
My students are special and unique because of their ability to overcome adversity and not let life drag them down. They work together with others to help understand our learning concepts. Many times my classroom is the safe place where these kids are just kids. They get to explore their learning in a safe environment where all of their needs are being met.
My Project
As educators, we are told that we need to give the same quality of education to all of our students. We teach them all the same curriculum with the intention of them being able to access and then understand the same skills. Unfortunately, many of the students in my classroom do not enter at the same level in my playing field. Many of my students do not have access to current technology in their home. It is imperative that I begin teaching 21st learning skills to help bridge the gap between this special population of kids so that they are able to work with their peers effectively. I am asking five Samsung tablets to use in small group instruction and whole group classroom discussion. I want to use learning apps that allow my students to develop their vocabulary visually and allows them to participate in classroom discussions without fear of embarrassment from their lack of knowledge. I want to create background knowledge in small groups before these students enter into whole group discussions. The background information will allow them to actively enter into the discussion. Many of these students have problems in their home life that keep them from fully engaging in the classroom. I am planning on using the tablets to help increase their engagement. If I can keep them actively engaged, give them background information to aid in their understanding, and allow them to participate without fear of feeling ignorant in front of their peers, then I can lead help them develop 21st century learning skills that will allow them to become better students and eventually productive members of our society.
