My Students

My school and students are very unique. My school is unique in that we focus around the fine arts. My students are unique in that they are extremely talented in their art areas, however, they are still middle school students. The middle school years can be very difficult with the many changes our students endure. While enduring these changes a great deal of our students don't know where to turn, or feel that no one empathizes with what they're going through. A method that my school has developed to aide our students with this, in particular our female students, is a Mother-Daughter Book Club.

A majority of our student population is economically disadvantaged, and 75% of our students receive free and/or reduced lunch.

Each of my students has their own individual story, and some of these stories are true definitions of triumph. The ability to participate in this program will allow students the chance to discuss some of these obstacles and create ways of rising above them. It is our hope that with this book club our students will be able to use the issues mentioned in the book(s) as an empowerment tool.

My Project

Our students are at an important part in their lives when they are trying to discover who they really are. During this time it may be difficult for them to express their feelings and open up to others. It is our hope that with our Mother-Daughter Book Club we will be able to bridge those gaps for our students. We hope that through reading The Mighty Miss Malone, along with their mothers, they'll be able to open up and overcome any issues they may be dealing with. We also hope to increase our parent involvement by inviting our mothers, and other women who play an intricate part in our student's lives, to participate as well.
