Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bright, inquisitive, and curious would be some adjectives to describe the children I work with. They are talented students working hard every day to succeed. The majority of students in my school come from minority backgrounds and many are English language learners. This year, all of the students in my school receive free lunch and breakfast. Many take home food bags from a local food bank each weekend to make sure they get enough to eat.
My students have all been identified as needing enrichment to continue growing and learning.
I am a gifted and talented specialist, and I work with a mixture of students who are identified as gifted and students identified as high ability learners. These kids have great academic potential, and my goal is to give them the support and skills they need to reach it.
My Project
Each year, a local university holds a bridge building competition for students. This year, I would like to give my students the opportunity to participate for the first time. By teaching a bridge building unit, my students will have the chance to learn about structural engineering and the engineering design process. Beyond just building a bridge, they will also be practicing and improving their research and math skills and learning to work in a team.
The bridge building competition is held each year at the university, exposing students to college life.
Many of my students come from families where they would be the first to go to college, and the chance to visit a university at a young age would be very powerful. They will have the ability to interact with engineering professors and students. I hope that this will help them see possibilities for their future education they may not have been exposed to.
The competition supplies kits with wood and glue, but my students need tools to be able to safely and precisely cut the wood. These wood cutters are the perfect option for that, with secure covers over the blades. Having a good set of safe cutters will allow my students to compete this spring and for many years to come.
