GRIT...if you ask any one of my 5th graders what I hope they will learn this year, it is just that, GRIT. The ability to persevere when challenged, continue to try even after failing over and over, and embracing mistakes. These kids do that, and more, each and every day.
In our classroom, we don't let hard work stand in our way, we embrace it.
We know that making mistakes is part of our journey. These 90 fabulous 5th graders come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds each facing numerous challenges each day. Yet, somehow they are able to leave everything else at the door, and impress me every day.
I am so proud of these hard hard-working kids, I can't wait to see what creations, discoveries, and inventions are in store in for their future.
My Project
My mission is to prepare my students for the future careers of the 21st century; positions that don't even exist yet. To help meet this challenge, with the funding from this project, I will be able to add a lego makerspace to our 5th grade learning space. This space will help students build engineering and real-life problem solving skills that are essential for their future.
I need to provide students with the opportunity to collaborate, problem solve, invent, and persevere.
Legos have for years been known to help students foster creativity and develop spacial and mathematical thinking while having fun. These materials will be used for solving challenges through STEM bins that will require students to think critically, engineer, and work together. The bricks will be used for bridge building, maze building, and tower building challenges to name a few, that will involve constraints to make them extra engaging. Of course, students will also be able to use the bricks to simply be creative. It is amazing how much students learn through working together. This project will help equip our kids who are from a small, rural school, with the skills that that will help them succeed in school and beyond.
My wish if for all students at our school to learn engineering and computer science basics by the time they leave 5th grade. Research has shown that by age 10 students will know whether they will pursue an engineering career in their future. My goal is for my students to leave our school wanting to take this path. With the funding of this project, I will be able to begin to meet this challenge. Our students will leave our school better equipped to meet the the demands of the future.
