My students need the proper equipment in order to safely learn the practices of yoga and mindfulness, they will then become student leaders that will help teach others these practices.
Our school is an inner city school comprised of a diverse population. Many of our students face barriers in attending school and accessing their educations including homelessness, poverty, violence, familial substance abuse and others. Our students are in need of tools to help them better manage everyday stressors and challenges. Often times teachers are the first line of awareness of these challenges and are tasked with educating students as well as meeting their needs. We are always in search of better ways to address these ongoing challenges.
Our school is a place where we truly value and promote the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, this includes both physical and emotional well being.
We want to provide students with the tools and skills necessary to be successful in school and in life. The health and well being of our educators is equally important as we must model this for our students.
My Project
These materials will assist the school in creating a space dedicated to yoga and mindfulness, in which they will be exposed to still and moving forms of meditation. Students and teachers will be able to utilize mats, blocks and yoga straps to assist in learning physical yoga postures. The yoga videos will provide some ideas and inspiration. Books will help educate students on how and why to practice yoga and mindfulness. Students who are interested will have an opportunity to join this group for a period of time so that they can become our future student leaders. These leaders will help others throughout the school to learn some of the same skills.
Students and teachers will have the opportunity to practice different breathing techniques, poses and stretches in order to release negative feelings and improve physical well being.
This practice will help to combat long periods of sitting, inability to focus, better posture, increased motor development, improved digestion and circulation as well as better sleep. These practices can provide ways to become more aware of how attitude and choices can impact ourselves and those around us, as well as to be more compassionate and less judgmental. The hope is to create a school environment that is supportive, connected, understanding and safe for all who are here.
