Breathe for Change: Promoting Social Justice Through Yoga and Mindfulness

I need funding to participate in in the Breathe for Change yoga, mindfulness and social emotional learning training so that I can support my students as they strive to be their best selves.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in an urban district in Massachusetts. Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds, and they have a variety of different needs. Unfortunately, at such a young age many of them have experienced some form of trauma. However, they still come to school each day to learn so that they can better themselves with the hope that they will be able to help their family if they study hard.

No matter what challenges they face at home my students come to school every day and try their best.

Some days this is easier than others, but I encourage my students to find at least one positive moment in each day. Learning reading, math, science, and social studies can be difficult when their mind is focused on problems outside of the classroom.

Research shows that mindfulness and yoga practices for teachers and students both lead to increased performance, self-compassion, and resilience, and reduced stress and burnout. I am hoping to attend the Breathe for Change professional development program that begins in January 2024. This program will teach me how to implement yoga in my classroom along with a variety of mindfulness strategies to help my students with their social and emotional well-being.

My personal yoga practice changed my life and is beginning to change the environment of my classroom. I can only imagine the transformation that will happen when I can fully implement a researched-based program like Breathe for Change.
