Breathe, Feel, and Learn - Tools for Calm Down Kits

Help me give my students tools to use when the day feels hard! We sometimes need a little extra help calming down when we have big feelings. These tools can help us breathe and focus.

My Students

As a school psychologist, I work with students in all grades from prekindergarten through eighth grade. I usually work with students when they are having a difficult day. That could be because of something that happened at home, a conflict with peers, a difficult test, or just overall worry because of the pandemic. We work through it all! Through lunch groups and classwide lessons, we also try to get in front of the challenges by building skills that help everyone.

Our students are so resilient!

They have been through virtual, hybrid, and in-person learning over the last two years. Many have moved houses, known people who have been sick or in the hospital, and faced separation from friends. Coming back to the school building has been exciting but it has also been overwhelming for many kids.

My Project

More students than ever are coming to school with a lot of feelings. Often those feelings are ones that help us learn like excitement, curiosity, and gratitude. Sometimes the feelings make it hard to learn like sadness about being away from parents or grandparents, worry about what's going to happen next with COVID, and stress about being around so many people again. This year, we are using a lot of tools to build up strategies for recognizing and processing those emotions. These tools will help us refresh our calming kits with new and exciting strategies for naming the feeling, breathing, and staying mindful by focusing on texture or pressure.

Students need to feel safe before they can learn.

These kits help our students find that feeling of safety even when a day feels really hard. By learning to use these sensory-based strategies, students are also building emotion-regulation skills that will serve them long after they leave our school!
