I am an EL teacher and all of my students are second language learners. Most of these students have immigrated into the U.S. from another country. Our students come from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. Countries include Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Palua and more! Sadly, many students have to leave their countries due to war, natural disasters, extreme poverty, etc. In addition, many of these students come here without their families and are living with a sponsor. Not only are they acclimating to a new culture, school system, and language, but often times have to work full-time in order to support themselves and their families.
Because of the extreme circumstances in which they arrive here, many students struggle with their social and emotional health.
In addition, immigration status may impact the ability to secure basic services or benefits, such as:
Food
Housing and utilities (such as heating assistance in the winter)
Social-emotional/mental health services
Medical and dental care
Transportation
My Project
Breathe For Change is a movement to enhance the health and well-being of educators, students, and school communities through social-emotional learning and mind-body wellness.
The program's mission is to Change the World, One Teacher at a Time.
Breathe For Change is an equity-driven organization deeply committed to using wellness and social-emotional learning as vehicles for social change.
Upon successful completion of the Breathe For Change 200-hour Wellness and Yoga Teacher Training requirements, graduates are eligible to receive the internationally recognized Yoga Alliance Yoga Teacher Certification (CYT-200), as well as Breathe For Change Wellness Champion Certification. Graduates are qualified to practice and teach social-emotional learning, mindfulness, wellness, and yoga in a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and inclusive way within the diverse school and community contexts.
After graduation, Wellness Champions gain access to ongoing resources through the Breathe For Change ChangeMaker Program, which includes monthly webinars led by Founder & CEO, Dr. Ilana Nankin to support them in lead social-emotional learning and wellness experiences in their schools and surrounding communities.
