We've been utilizing the texts in smaller pieces by reading content relevant sections and/or chapters from the texts as we build up to our goal of reading a book together as a class or have a class book club. One of the first texts I implemented to ease some of their fears of seeing a stack of books next to my desk, was an infographic book that helped provide students a concise but still comprehensive and accessible visual overview of elections and political parties in the United States prior to starting our election project. The other significant has been each student receiving their own pocket Constitution which they were surprisingly more happy to use than online versions to make their own mini-Constitution booklet.\r\n\r\nStudents have also been slowly coming around to the novelty and engagement that political based games have to offer. It started off as alternative activities during down time but we'll be using the election and court games as a class in our upcoming units. They quickly acknowledged the importance of reading directions in their entirety before beginning the games and also engaged in interesting critiques about the quality and clarity of the directions. They also expressed their preference for playing physical games rather than online games which has been making up a a good chunk of some of our lesson activities and now I have well crafted alternatives for students.\r\n\r\n\r\nI am thrilled that this opportunity was offered to me and my students. They are certainly ready for the challenge of tackling these texts with the proper supporters to ease them into reading on a level that some of them may have never yet been asked to do.","fullyFundedDate":1761839554900,"projectUrl":"project/secondary-civics-instructional-materials/9853877/","projectTitle":"Secondary Civics Instructional Materials, Books, Games and Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Parks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10327505_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761232419700","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10327505"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44492","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1428,"numTeachers":68,"percentFrplEligible":63,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":26,"percentWhite":42,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.2,"schoolId":44492,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Milford High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Milford High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/milford-school-district/milford-high-school/44492"}
