Breaking the Secret Code of Reading!

Help me give my students Secret Stories®, a brain based approach to traditional phonics instruction that accelerates learner access to the reading and writing code. It provides the logical explanations for letter sound behavior that learners brains crave.

My Students

My 1st grade students come from a rural community situated on an Indian reservation. It is a low-income/high poverty school district where almost all of my students are Native American and 100% receive free and reduced price lunches.

My students are eager learners, very creative, artistic, and love to read!

However, students typically start school with approximately 5,000 fewer words in their vocabulary than a typical kindergartner. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population in relation to surrounding communities.

We offer a comprehensive educational program for kindergarten through 12th grade. The district is fully accredited by the state Department of Education. We are working hard to foster a love of reading and to close the achievement gap!

My Project

Secret Stories® provides the logical explanations for letter sound behavior that learners brains crave. These logical explanations are shared in the form of “secret” stories, which are the secret reasons WHY letters make all of the crazy sounds that they do when they get together in words.

This brain based approach will help my students break the reading code.

Most of my students come into 1st grade below grade level and as struggling readers. Reading is HARD for them. This is due to the lack of books in the home, starting school with thousands of words less than a typical kindergartner, in addition to dealing with the stresses of trauma and poverty in their lives.

By using Secret Stories, this is one area where I can help make their lives a little easier.
