Breaking Down the Brick Walls: Seniors & The Last Lecture

My students need 35 copies of Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture" to complete a senior year "Breaking Down the Brick Walls" project.

My Students

My students are college prep/dual enrollment--Eng 101 college academic writing & HS senior English British literature. These are the youth who will lead our nation, and must learn how to break down the brick walls to secure their future and the future of our nation. Pausch helps them find a hammer.

My students are in a rural Louisiana school.

There are 98 students in their graduating class. This year I have 22 students; last year I had 44. These are our academic best. In order to qualify to get into class they must reach a threshold ACT score and GPA. The students also must fulfill a summer reading requirement and pass a test over the material in the fall to remain in the class. They must prove not only their ability to perform in the class, but also their commitment. We work hard. We work smart. My goal is to give them the tools to help them be successful in their college years and beyond. This program lowers the early college drop out rates for our students. If they can climb my brick wall of writing, they will be prepared to break down more brick walls in their continued education and chosen profession. Randy Pausch gives incredible practical advice that will benefit them on the front end of their education. Please help me add this tool for success to our toolbox.

My Project

My students need 35 copies of Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture to complete a senior year "Breaking Down the Brick Walls" project. Randy Pausch gives practical advice for success in academic life and life in general that is clear, concise, and, most of all, works. Every chapter in his book can lead to class discussions and writing projects that will have real-life applications for my students. A quote on my wall, my favorite from his book is "Brick walls are there to stop the other people." I don't want any brick wall to stop my students when they are pursuing a well-chosen goal.

Breaking down brick walls is something every great person in history has learned to do and do successfully.

Help me equip my students to become the great persons they have the potential to be.
