Breaking Barriers and Bringing the World to Our Classroom!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For indeed, that's all who ever have." True heart felt words spoken by Margaret Mead. This is the environment that my classroom rests upon. Students can make a difference in the world they live in and breaking language barriers is a start!

I have students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.

Most if not all of these students come from low income families and have never even been to downtown Houston. They are great kids that have had very difficult lives but regardless of this they want to succeed and make something of themselves. They are eager to soak up the Spanish language and realize how important it is to do so. Since we can't provide a computer for each student and we can't finance every child's trip to visit other countries, what can we do? We can incorporate the use of an iPad in the classroom so that they can reinforce the Spanish they already know and are learning. We can facilitate the use of a digital camera so that the students not lucky enough to travel can live out the experience through pictures. The camera will also be used to capture images of the culture throughout the year and as the different holidays come about!

My Project

The new generation of leaders is a generation geared towards technology. Students are more engaged in learning when the lesson is brought to them through something they are familiar with. The use of an iPad in the classroom will help them not only work on their speaking skills but also their listening and reading through applications. Technology is a big part of our world today and they need to be exposed to it. I am also, currently sponsoring a trip to Brazil/Argentina, which allows students to submerge themselves in a different culture other than the only one they know. The camera would serve as the eyes of many students that would like to go but even with the student price it is impossible. We can bring back pictures and videos from other parts of the world to our very own world, which is our classroom. Your donation will help me make the impact more personal for them, knowing that their peers have experienced this new world and that they too can see what they saw, through a lens.

Spanish is a dominate language in the area that we live in.

Often jobs are dependent on how many languages we speak. This project will broaden my students knowledge of the language and prepare them for the real world. They will take from my classroom a very powerful tool which is communication. The ability to communicate with Spanish speaking individuals and understand their culture, their world! Please be apart of helping these kids succeed and open up their minds to what the world has to offer.
