This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are in a community that has suffered from cyclical socioeconomic disadvantages. We are a true Title I school with funding 100% free or reduced lunches, programs such as 21st Century Centers, and back buddies. Despite their financial status my students are inspiring. They do things daily that encourage me to do more as an educator.
Many of my students live in overcrowded homes with limited space and personal things to call their own.
These students show up daily with a smile because they know that in our classroom everyone matters and has their own individualized jobs and identity.
My students are overly exposed to violence and poverty at the tender ages between three to 11, but they find a way to persevere. Our school was completely washed away by Hurricane Harvey, but our community of helpers, including my wonderful union ATPE refuse to let this loss determine the outcome of our academic success!
My Project
Often my students arrive late to school due to unreliable transportation, and they miss the free breakfast served by the school. When they miss breakfast it's nearly impossible to get them to engage in learning.
Maslows hierarchy needs theorizes that our most basic needs include food and we cannot reach the next level of needs before we meet our physiological needs.
The breakfast cereal and snacks from this project will help students to fulfill their most basic needs and in turn help them to focus on the academics for the day.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
