Breadcrumbs to My Reading Life

Help me give my students entry into the magical world of Harry Potter. A class set of books and illustrated versions to support challenged readers will enable me to immerse my students in the classic tale.

This project expired on May 5, 2022.

My Students

Simply put, my students are amazing. Unfortunately, many of them have not realized it yet. Whether it is growing up in a historically impoverished neighborhood, attending a Title I middle school where 65%+ received free or reduced-price school lunch, or facing many of the life challenges that distract away from achieving one's best, my students have found it hard to see their own value. Yet, they not only persevere but thrive when given opportunities to do so. My students voraciously consume new information, often littering me with questions and queries about topics big and small. They read, research, and explore. Most importantly, all of my 150 middle school students seek the means to define themselves beyond the confines of what life has given them or what is stereotypically expected of them. Simply put, they enthusiastically seek, and deserve, more. I am proud to be a teacher of such amazing students!

My Project

In delivering a recent lesson, I showed a brief two-minute clip of the first Harry Potter movie to illustrate a point about character analysis. I chose Harry Potter as it has always been a familiar tale to most students. Yet, I realized that this year's students had never read the tale as most students read it in fourth or fifth grade. This year's students had been remote during this time and missed out on a series that often serves as a breadcrumb to students' reading lives. It offers the kind of age-appropriate magical escape that helps students to visualize themselves being brave, being creative, and defining a path to their own greatness. I want to build a reading of this book into my curriculum as it offers plenty of room for discussion, analysis, thematic definition, and creativity.

By offering students an easy entry point into their reading lives, we can help to develop a love of and success in reading through a shared reading experience.

That is where you come in. By supporting this project, you support a class set of books, additional illustrated versions to help struggling students better visualize the story, and headphones to listen to audiobook versions of novels. This ensures that everyone has access to a vital shared experience that may the spark that ignites a child's love of reading or creative writing.
