My Students

My 9th Grade ELA students in Trenton, NJ are amazing. Yes, every teacher says that about their students, but mine really are. I teach literature, and every year when I teach the "same old stories," I learn something new. I'm able to learn something new and exciting in a story I've taught for the past 10 years because my students bring their experiences--good, bad, ugly, joyous--into my room and use them to dig deep into the stories we're reading.

My 9th Grade ELA students in Trenton, NJ come from Black and Hispanic low-income families.

Many of my students are the first individual in their family to attend high school. Many of my students act as English-language interprets for their older family members, are surrogate parents for their younger family members, and work a part-time job to help support their family. All of my students dream of graduating high school and doing something great with their lives.

My Project

My students live in Trenton, NJ, an urban jungle on the banks of the Delaware River. Many of my students have to walk more than two miles to get to school, and in the winter when it is windy and cold, they arrive almost frozen to the bone.

Arriving at school almost frozen to the bone makes it nearly impossible to focus on the task of learning.

The reason for a drop in concentration and performance when we are cold is because of the energy that is used by our bodies in trying to make us warmer. Less energy therefore goes into helping you concentrate.
