This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the honor of serving as the science teacher for four cohorts of phenomenal 4th graders in Nashville. Even with all of the craziness that is virtual learning, they have shown so much resilience and adapted so well to the circumstances (maybe even better than I have). Although we've not had the pleasure of learning together in person (yet), we've already managed to build strong relationships and make some great memories. They keep my spirits high and inspire me to be a better teacher every single day.
My Project
The end of last school year and the first half of the present have been the wildest of rides. When schools first closed down back in March, no one could have convinced me that I would still be teaching virtually at the end of the year (and now into the next!). It has been quite the journey, with all of us learning and adapting almost daily to this new reality.
This year, my students have not been able to engage with science texts as much, or in the same ways, as we normally would have if we were in-person.
These days, any science text I want students to engage with are limited to what I can find online in the form of a PDF. In general, I think it's safe to say that many students all over the nation are not reading as many books this year as they typically would if we were in person, where they have constant access to classroom libraries.
Whenever we are able to safely return back to the classroom, I want my students to have access to as many books as possible to make up for the lack of books they've engaged with over the past (almost) year. Specifically, I want them to have access to grade-level, age-appropriate books about the science concepts we've learned about this year to supplement everything they learned while we were virtual.
My current science library is a little bit lacking, comprised mostly of old and previously used books I've gathered from places like Goodwill or McKay's. Many of them are tattered and outdated, and I think it's time for a refresh! I hope you will help me make this happen for our future scientists!
