Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Title I school is located in an area that is filled with a very diverse group of young learners. Some, not all, of our students are considered to be both special needs as well as English Language Learners (ELL).

My students are extremely inquisitive and always asking questions and looking to explore new ideas on a daily basis.

My students love to learn, and share their findings with all who will listen. They are a true joy to work with every day.

My Project

It has recently come to my attention that Scholastic, the company we all know and loved as children, the company that brought many of us childhood memories (Can you smell those book order forms now as you read?) has recently created a selection of books known as BRANCHES books.

These books are designed to be engaging and easily accessible for reluctant readers as well as those just beginning to BRANCH towards chapter books.

In 5th grade it is hard enough for my students to know that they are reading lower level books than their peers, but to hear questions about why their books look different can make things even more difficult for them. Access to these books and the graphic novels I have requested will allow students to feel like they are reading the same chapter books as their peers, while engaging them and helping them grow as readers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
