My Students

Our students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and income levels, yet they integrate seamlessly as a whole. We have very caring students who have high goals for themselves, even though they know they face many challenges. Students at our school are learning to have the growth mind-set and are also learning to become leaders of their own education and lives. In other words they come to school not only to learn but to grown their brains and to find their personal genius

Our unique 4-5-6 grade program integrates across subjects, and grade levels and includes our students with autism as much as possible.

My Project

A deck of cards and the rules of a games such as Hearts or 13 can develop critical thinking skills in a child that has never been challenged to think in this way. I teach a combined 5th an 6th grade elective devoted to teaching low-income students how to play games that challenge them to think mathematically and logically and give them an entertainment resource beyond video games. Rummikub and Othello are great strategic games that encourage students to discover patterns. Scrabble is a classic word game that develops word pattern knowledge. And a deck of cards? Why that's entertainment and brain boosting power in a box!
