Brainstormers Take Charge!

My students need building tools, art and science supplies, and basic STEM kits that will help them to stretch their imaginations, learn new skills and put their knowledge and creativity to the test.

My Students

Barton Brainstormers is a constantly evolving, student-directed, lunchtime club that is comprised of any interested students in the fourth grade. Brainstormers are English Language Learners, General and Special Education students and kids from all social and economic strata.

What began as a casual crew of five, has quickly morphed into an ever-growing band of artists, inventors and scientists who love to create, solve problems and figure things out, by being adventurous, working together and helping each other.

Brainstormers pride themselves on being inclusive- anyone who wants to join, can! Students are free to attend our lunchtime meetings--or not, according to their interests. It's all up to them. Our only rule is "Be Inclusive" and our motto is, "You're in!"

My Project

The Barton Brainstormers club has always been student-centered and directed. At the end of each project, students brainstorm new ideas and vote on plans for the next. Now that they've successfully created and completed several projects and gotten some experience under their belts, BRAINSTORMERS WILL TAKE CHARGE and bring the learning to the next level: THEY will introduce, TEACH and LEAD their classmates in ALL new projects.

The materials we are asking for are tools and supplies we will use to supplement what we have on hand, or things we find, recycle and repurpose.

Some of our past projects include learning how to:

- machine-sew decorative pillows, using repurposed bed pillows and fabric we've designed ourselves

- use a variety of tools, wood scraps and jewelry bits and pieces to create decorative and inspirational wall hangings, jewelry and objets d'art

- Devise original, symmetrical, mandala-inspired designs from foam and other material scraps

These projects enable students to use not only their artistic talents and skills, but also skills they've learned in academic areas such as math and science. Luckily, these past projects have been low/no-cost, as we've been able to use materials and tools we had, or those that were donated. Although we pride ourselves on making the most of what's already on hand, at this point, we've depleted our resources and are now in need of some help to continue the creativity, fun and learning!
