Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The gym is my second classroom. It's often that my scholar-athletes learn skills and habits that cannot be found in your typical classroom. Often times, I feel fortunate that I get to interact with these scholars over their entire high school career, as opposed to one year in a classroom.
We are a small biotech-related pathway school in California that opened in 2013.
These are public high school scholars who dared to take a new path by enrolling in a biotech pathway high school. These scholars challenge themselves every day and in every class; they listen to guest speakers from the local health and biotech community, they take field trips to see biotech practices in action, they take part in job shadowing and internships and they are working towards a bright and exciting future! Approximately 60% of our scholars are on free and reduced-price lunch. Along with these high demands of academics, some choose to participate in extracurricular activities. Our standards for participating in sports are actually higher than other local high schools.
My Project
Our boys and girls basketball program is looking to add two indoor portable scoreboards. Our programs are now expanding. The boys' program carried a roster of 23 scholar-athletes and the girls program carried 20 scholar-athletes. There are times when both programs split gym court and time.
Getting two indoor scoreboards will allow us to run practice smoother and provide more opportunity for scholars to get more scrimmages during practice.
Even at single team practices, it can be crowded with 20+ athletes at a practice. Splitting the team into multiple drills is an effective way to get more drills and more repetitions for each scholar-athlete.
In the future, if we held other tournaments, these scoreboards would allow us to host two games on each side court at the same time, allowing more teams to compete and continue fostering their high school experience.
