No child should have to sit still but the reality is that space is often limited and with the increasing academic demands, young students are required to spend longer periods of time seated. Moving is a natural part of learning but is often difficult in a classroom.
I teach in an integrated collaborative classroom that has students who are learning disabled, English language learners and general education students.
They are 6 and despite their academic differences they all share one basic need, movement. We have a multicultural and diverse school and classroom population. The kids are bright and energetic and require a physical outlet that will help them stay focused on their tasks while releasing natural movement energy.
My Project
As the students sit at their desks, the bouncy band will allow them to use their feet to move and fidget without disturbing the learning of their peers. They will learn to self regulate their bodies needs and focus their energy while staying engaged in their tasks. Most kids tend to put their feet on the bars of the desks and shake or kick to release energy. This is not intended to disturb others but often creates banging sounds which distracts their classmates or shakes the desk which affects their focus. These bouncy bands are designed for the desk and allow the students to do the same movements without creating classroom disturbances. Kids want to succeed and just need the tools to do so. With these bouncy bands, their 6 year old energy will be focused in a productive way allowing them to continue with their learning.
Through the funding of this project, the students will be able to build stamina and focus more easily on academic tasks.
They will learn to self regulate their physical needs and give them self continual movement breaks. They will learn to recognize what their bodies need to stay on task and how to channel their energies in a productive way.
