Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright and caring students from a low income area in California. We are at a Title I elementary school located in a small farming community in Watsonville, CA. All of my students receive free or reduced rate lunch.
Most of my students are bilingual, with Spanish being their native language.
Despite many hardships, my students come to school every day ready and excited to learn. They work very hard and have helped to build and fun and caring classroom community. Their excitement for learning is inspiring and I'm so honored to be their teacher.
My Project
There are many benefits to flexible seating: choice, physical health, and comfort are just a few. Last school year, our writing period was deemed "coffeeshop time" where students were able to choose a place in the classroom that would inspire learning. This year I want to grow this coffeeshop feel to stretch across the school day. Flexible seating allows students to make choices that work best for them and their learning. During our coffeeshop work time, students choose a location in the classroom that works for them: at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clipboard.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating: great seat choice, increased engagement, and productivity, to name a few. The stability balls, wobble balance board and cushion will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. These products will be especially beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out!
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students attitude and their work and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
